Investment in the metalworking of the future

In the summer of 2017, we decided to purchase a fiber laser. What impact the investment was to have on our business, what it actually has today and what advantages result for our customers - we report on this in this blog post.

Laser cutting and lasercutting are important components of a modern manufacturing process. The use of laser technology is offered by numerous companies in the production chain. The number of market players is growing and the new acquisition of a laser machine is cost-intensive, which is why we considered the step very carefully.

Decision: specialization in stock products and custom products

Lasers are a logical addition to our core business, metalworking, and an asset to the quality of our products and service. The acquisition of a fiber laser was intended to make our operations more efficient. The goal was to advance our development in order to expand our market position. Previously, we gave orders that involved laser processing to various partners. It was clear to us that with the investment we would have to specialize in a subarea, since no laser machine can cover all order requests. For our decision, we analyzed previous orders. Our planned focus on laser parts for custom products and the processing of our stock products such as perforated sheets and fabrics was also taken into account. The selection fell on the fiber laser "Mazak Optilex Nexus 3015 Fiber 2D". We cut in the range of 0.5 mm to 15 mm material thickness, for steel up to 10 mm. Specific areas of application are perforated and unperforated sheets, non-ferrous metals, expanded metal and fabric as well as square and rectangular tubes.

Customer benefits of our laser processing

For our customers, our investment means faster processing of orders. Usually, various machining processes are necessary in one manufacturing process. We already have several processes in-house such as punching, edging, welding. In addition, we are strong in material sourcing and have access to a wide range of laser-suitable stock products, such as expanded metal, fabric and perforated sheets. These are the benefits to our customers: - Time savings and reliability due to production at one location - Cost savings due to elimination of transportation costs - More environmentally friendly production due to reduced CO2 emissions - Low coordination requirements reduce susceptibility to errors - Alternative, gentle process for materials that were previously punched - Economical creation of prototypes or small quantities, since no tooling costs are incurred when using lasers - Customized special designs The more complex and extensive the production, the more advantages result.

Laser technology favors our SCS business area

Today, our laser investment has had a positive impact on a new business area. It has been added to our "Secure Cage Systems" division, with which we provide physical data security and offer security cages for data centers and companies. Complex special solutions play a central role here, which is why the "Mazak Optilex Nexus 3015 Fiber 2D" is regularly used. An advantage that makes us more competitive and ensures that laser production is utilized more quickly and regularly.

All the positive aspects should not obscure the fact that investments in new machines involve risks as well as economic opportunities. There is always one variable, future sales. Before making acquisitions of this magnitude, a healthy self-confidence, confidence and a sufficiently long phase of analysis and evaluation are part of the mandatory program. Even if time is sometimes pressing. We see the laser as a piece of the puzzle in our market- and customer-oriented corporate management.
